The goal of the Aim document is to align developmental alpine ski racing programs across Canada. It is meant as a long term model starting with the FUNdamental phase.

Emphasis is on the development of physical skills such as agility, balance, co-ordination, speed strength, flexibility and endurance through the use of fun activities and games.

Participation in as many sports as possible is encouraged. In this stage there is no periodization or emphasis on distinct training periods and competitive periods.

Physical development of children at this age is taken into consideration. At this age larger muscle groups are more developed than smaller ones and the cardiovascular system is still developing. Children are more skilled in movements involving large muscle groups rather than precisely coordinated movements involving the interaction of smaller muscles.

The body at this age is susceptible to injuries through too much stress or heavy pressure. Strength training should be limited to their own body weight or medicine ball exercises as opposed to lifting weights. Activities and games that emphasize balance, coordination, core strength, speed, flexibility and endurance should be encouraged. Activities such as gymnastics, diving, soccer, dance and kayaking will help develop a good sense of balance, coordination and inner core strength.

The skiing skills that are necessary to develop at this age are the following:

  • Develop and train GS and SL skiing in modified courses
  • Develop basic line and turn shape
  • Ski GS, SL, Obstacle and terrain courses
  • Work on a good natural stance
  • Ski well in all conditions – groomed, soft, bumps, powder, flat and steep
  • Carve ski on the fall line
  • Practice and learn at least 15 free ski drills (360’s, one ski skiing, jumping)

Recommended training at this age:

  • Dryland practices of 60 minutes for 6-8 year olds
  • Dryland practices 9-10 year olds of 60-90 minutes
  • Strive for at least 4 training sessions per week (2 ski specific, two other sport specific
  • Ski as often as possible
